Diesel Price Spikes Make Electric Trucks Cheaper in EU
Transport & Environment reports that electric trucks are now cheaper to operate than diesel models in six major EU markets due to rising fuel costs.
Rising diesel prices linked to conflict involving Iran have made electric trucks cheaper to own and operate than diesel models in six major European Union markets. An analysis by Transport & Environment found that operators in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, and Belgium can now recoup the initial price premium of electric vehicles in approximately two years.
These six markets represent 46% of all heavy-truck registrations in the EU. The report indicates that five-year savings reach up to €100,000 in the Netherlands and €85,000 in Germany. While high purchase costs and limited charging infrastructure previously hindered the transition, the business case for electrification has strengthened as fuel costs climb.
European truckmakers including Daimler Truck, AB Volvo, and Scania AB face new pressure as lower-cost Chinese electric trucks prepare to enter the market. These imports are priced roughly 30% below European equivalents, which could provide German operators an additional €34,000 in savings over five years.
