NuScale Power Targets AI Data Centers With Modular Reactors

NuScale Power is marketing its small modular reactor (SMR) technology to address the increasing energy requirements of global data center infrastructure fueled by artificial intelligence. As the first company to obtain approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for an SMR, the firm presents its technology as a faster alternative to traditional power plants and a cleaner option than natural gas, which often clashes with the carbon-reduction goals of major technology companies.

NuScale Power has not yet brought its first system online, with that milestone potentially delayed until 2030 or later. This timeline persists despite significant growth in the sector; McKinsey & Co. estimates that global spending on data centers could reach $7 trillion by 2030 to support the scale of AI infrastructure.
