Retail Chains Close Hundreds of Stores Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis
Major retailers and charities including H&M Hennes & Mauritz AB and the British Heart Foundation are closing hundreds of stores globally due to rising rents and energy costs.
A wave of store closures is affecting high street retail and charity organizations across the United Kingdom and globally. These shutdowns are driven by a combination of the cost-of-living crisis, escalating energy costs, and rising rents.
The British Heart Foundation confirmed the closure of 150 stores, with 87 scheduled to shut by March 2027 and the remaining locations under review until March 2028. In the commercial sector, Morrisons is proceeding with a plan to close 100 Morrisons Daily stores, including recent closures in Woodley, Berkshire, and Stokesley, North Yorkshire. However, the supermarket chain intends to open 300 new stores in different locations.
International retailers are also reducing their footprints. H&M Hennes & Mauritz AB reduced its global store count from 4,166 to 4,036 after closing 130 branches in one year, with additional closures planned. Other specific shutdowns include Decathlon closing its Queens Square store in Crawley and Charles Clinkard shutting its Banbury Road branch in Oxford.
