Kirsty McNeill Reaffirms UK Aid Target and Funds El Niño Relief

Development Minister Kirsty McNeill reaffirmed the UK government's manifesto pledge to return aid spending to 0.7% of national income. While she provided no specific timetable for this return, she stated the target will be pursued as fiscal circumstances allow.

McNeill announced the allocation of up to £15 million from the humanitarian crisis fund to support preventive measures in countries threatened by El Niño. These funds will target livestock vaccination and cash transfers for farmers. She outlined a strategic focus on five key areas: health, climate, food, human, and economic security.

To maximize the impact of existing resources, McNeill intends to pursue bespoke partnerships and reform international bodies. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband signaled that development and climate will remain central to British policy, a shift highlighted by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office directly occupying the UK's seat on the World Bank board.
