NDA Allies and Opposition Clash Over Election Commission Disputes

The Election Commission of India is facing intense pressure from both the government's allies and the opposition following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded 14 written dissents over 10 months. The disputes center on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with objections reportedly describing some actions regarding voter registration and data handling in Goa and West Bengal as unauthorised and illegal.

Allies of the National Democratic Alliance, including Union Ministers Chirag Paswan and H. D. Kumaraswamy, as well as leaders from the Telugu Desam Party and Rashtriya Lok Morcha, have urged the commission to issue a formal clarification. While some NDA members like Rajiv Ranjan Singh defended the body, others warned that public trust in the democratic process is at stake if misgivings are not dispelled. The Election Commission has rejected claims of a functional breakdown, asserting that internal queries are standard administrative practice and that all final decisions regarding the SIR were reached unanimously.

Simultaneously, the INDIA bloc and the Indian National Congress have intensified protests, with leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Dipankar Bhattacharya demanding the resignation or arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition figures allege the SIR process was used to rig elections by removing marginalized voters. Protests in New Delhi and Guwahati have led to several police detentions, and the opposition is scheduled to meet on September 30 to coordinate their response.
