Billionaires Donate £179 Million to British Political Parties Since 2019

Research from the Institute for Public Policy Research reveals that individual billionaires have contributed £179 million to British political parties since 2019. The data shows a sharp increase in mega-donations, with annual contributions exceeding £1 million rising from an average of £3.9 million between 2001 and 2018 to £13.1 million between 2019 and 2025.

Recent funding includes £36 million each from billionaires Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo to Reform UK. The Conservative and Labour parties have also received millions from donors including Frank Hester and Gary Lubner. In response to these trends, some Labour MPs are proposing an annual donation cap of either £100,000 or £500,000.

The Government of the United Kingdom has established a taskforce to examine the influence of mega-donors and has capped overseas voter donations at £100,000. However, No 10 has expressed reluctance to implement a general cap on all donations due to concerns from trade unions regarding their own future funding capabilities.
