Huawei Launches Mate 90 Series With Homegrown Chips

Huawei Technologies released the Mate 90 smartphone series featuring a redesigned chip architecture and HarmonyOS 7 to bypass US semiconductor restrictions.

Huawei Technologies launched its Mate 90 smartphone series on October 1, utilizing a homegrown operating system and a redesigned chip architecture to mitigate the impact of US semiconductor restrictions. The premium models are powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which uses a 3D internal wiring technique called LogicFolding to increase processing speed and density. The devices run on HarmonyOS 7, an Android-free operating system.

Despite the technological advancements, Huawei executives acknowledged that advanced semiconductor capacity in China remains limited. Rising costs for memory and components forced the company to increase prices for the new series, with the Mate 90 Pro Max priced at 9,999 yuan.

In the foldable market, Huawei reported a 75% share of the Chinese market. The company also noted a 76% weekly sales surge for its Pura X Max following Apple's September announcement of the iPhone Duo.
