US and Russian Finance Ministers Meet at G20 Summit
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in Asheville to discuss financial cooperation and a peace plan for Ukraine.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on the sidelines of a Group of 20 gathering in Asheville, North Carolina. The officials discussed bilateral financial cooperation, G20 collaboration, and a peace plan for Ukraine proposed by President Donald Trump.
This encounter marks the first time Siluanov has attended a G20 meeting in person since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The meeting drew immediate criticism from European officials, most notably German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil. Klingbeil refused to pose for a group photo with Siluanov, arguing that the Russian minister's participation represents an "attempt at normalization."
Klingbeil further asserted that "there is no normal situation with Russia right now," signaling a divide between the U.S. approach to engagement and the stance of some European allies during the summit.
