Nigeria Lifts Suspension on Onion Exports to Ghana
The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria resumed onion exports to Ghana following consultations with regional trade and diplomatic authorities.
The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) lifted its suspension on onion exports to Ghana on August 19, 2026. The decision followed consultations between the association, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), diplomatic authorities, and the ministries of trade from both Nigeria and Ghana.
NOPPMAN had previously halted exports due to safety concerns and logistical challenges at Ghana's Kotoku Market. Nigerian and Nigerien traders reported difficulties regarding the reception, allocation, and offloading of onion consignments. In resuming trade, the association demanded that Ghanaian stakeholders guarantee fair market access and the safe movement of goods.
President Alhaji Aliyu Isah Maitasamu urged exporters to comply with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ECOWAS protocols. He called for the establishment of a permanent, transparent framework to prevent future trade disputes from escalating into violence or intimidation, emphasizing that disagreements should be addressed through dialogue and appropriate dispute-resolution mechanisms.
