RAF Launches Storm Fighter Program for AI Drone Warfare

Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth announced a strategic shift toward AI-enabled autonomous drones to prepare the Royal Air Force for potential conflict with Russia by 2030.

Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth announced a strategic shift for the Royal Air Force toward a future of autonomy, emphasizing the integration of AI-enabled drones to revolutionize warfare. Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute in London, Smyth detailed the £300m Storm Fighter programme, which will deploy four armed loyal wingman drones to accompany every Typhoon fighter. The program aims to provide affordable mass and force multiplication, with initial tests scheduled for next year and full service expected by 2030.

This transition aligns with a Nato directive for the United Kingdom to be prepared for potential conflict with Russia by 2030. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting noted the UK has a little over 1,000 days to be ready to fight and win alongside allies. Smyth stated that AI will enable warfare to speed beyond human comprehension, shifting the human role toward controlling activity and setting guardrails.

The strategy also addresses internal recruitment challenges, as the number of fully trained RAF personnel declined from 29,800 in 2020 to 27,850.
