Ofgem Chief Warns of Difficult Winter Energy Costs
Ofgem Chief Executive Tim Jarvis warned that rising wholesale prices will make the upcoming winter difficult for consumers without government assistance.
Ofgem Chief Executive Tim Jarvis warned at the Energy UK conference in London that the upcoming winter will be "difficult" for consumers. Jarvis attributed the pressure to rising wholesale prices driven by instability in the Middle East and stated that decisions on how to help those most likely to struggle lie with the government.
A 4% increase in the energy price cap took effect on October 1. However, Cornwall Insight forecasts a further 16% rise to £1,999 per year starting January 1, which would mark the largest increase since January 2023.
In response to these projections, the End Fuel Poverty Coalition has called on the government to implement an "emergency heat tariff" to cap heating costs. A Uswitch poll indicates that 1.7 million households may avoid using heating this winter due to cost concerns, while over 15 million homes express worry about being cold.
