Bank of Japan Schedules Board Speeches Ahead of September Meeting

The Bank of Japan scheduled several board member appearances to signal potential interest rate hikes before its September 17-18 policy meeting.

The Bank of Japan scheduled a series of speaking events for its board members to signal potential interest rate decisions leading up to its policy meeting on September 17-18. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino is set to speak on August 27, followed by board member Hajime Takata on September 2 and board member Kazuyuki Masu on September 10.

Market expectations for a rate hike have grown following a joint Japan-U.S. yen intervention and public comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who expressed a desire for an early hike. Governor Kazuo Ueda is expected to meet with Bessent during a G20 finance leaders' meeting on August 31 and September 1.

Analysts indicate that external pressure and rising domestic producer prices may prompt the bank to raise rates in September, with the potential for an additional increase in December.
