Jamia Millia Islamia Protests Lead to FIRs Against MPs
Jamia Millia Islamia students are on a hunger strike for a restored student union, leading to police FIRs against Congress MPs for trespassing.
Students at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi have been on an indefinite hunger strike since October 12, 2026, demanding the restoration of a students' union dissolved since 2006, the removal of the Chief Proctor, and the revocation of disciplinary actions. The university administration responded by shifting all classes online, closing libraries, and canceling the annual Talimi Mela 2026 due to safety concerns.
Tensions escalated when Congress MPs Imran Masood and Imran Pratapgarhi visited the campus to support the protesters. The university accused the lawmakers of unauthorized entry and inciting unrest, leading the Delhi Police to register an FIR for trespassing against them. During the unrest, controversial "Free Kashmir" graffiti appeared on campus walls. While Registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi condemned the slogans, student representative Jasim Ali refuted the claims, suggesting the administration planted the graffiti to derail the movement. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit characterized such activities in educational institutions as acts of terrorism.
University Registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi stated that elections will be scheduled once a committee, including student representatives, submits a draft constitution. He also offered to review disciplinary cases to reinstate innocent students. However, the Students' Federation of India has alleged a police crackdown and the forcible removal of hunger strikers, while university staff reported being pushed by protesters during attempts to end the agitation.
