India and Japan Launch AI Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai
India and Japan held their first AI Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai to coordinate policy and integrate India's tech talent with Japan's industrial expertise.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened the inaugural India-Japan Artificial Intelligence Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai on April 21, 2026. Co-chaired by Joint Secretary Amit Shukla and Deputy Assistant Minister Hanada Takahiro, the meeting focused on strategic cooperation across the entire AI stack, including infrastructure, development, and industrial deployment.
The dialogue aims to merge India's digital public infrastructure and talent pool with Japan's hardware precision and industrial expertise. Key objectives include promoting co-creation, enhancing policy convergence, and developing AI solutions for industrial domains to build a trustworthy ecosystem. The two nations also explored frameworks to increase the mobility of AI professionals, researchers, and engineers to address engineering shortages in Japan.
This meeting implements the India-Japan AI Cooperation Initiative established by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Fumio Kishida in August 2025. Both governments agreed to hold the next round of dialogues in Japan to continue positioning AI as a central pillar of their bilateral vision for the next decade.
