Louisiana Sets Runoff Elections for 5th and 6th Districts
Louisiana voters will head to runoff elections on December 12 to fill two congressional seats after primary candidates failed to secure majority votes.
Louisiana will hold runoff elections on December 12 for its 5th and 6th Congressional Districts after no candidates secured more than 50% of the vote in the November 3 primary.
In the 5th District, Republican State Representative Gabe Firment and Democratic State Representative Patricia Moore advanced to the runoff. The seat was vacated by Republican Congresswoman Julia Letlow, who left the position to run for the U.S. Senate. Firment campaigned on his legislative experience and conservative credentials, while Moore emphasized her role as a voice for the citizens of the district.
In the 6th District, former East Baton Rouge Metro Council member Chauna Banks and State Senator Blake Miguez will compete for the seat. Banks received 50,878 votes (19%) and Miguez received 50,213 votes (19%) in a field of 10 candidates. This seat became open after Democratic U.S. Representative Cleo Fields declined to seek reelection following a redistricting process. The redistricting followed an April 2026 ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, which found the state's previous congressional map to be an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, prompting lawmakers to approve a new map in May 2026.
