Yum China Acquires Pizza Hut China Brand for $1.2 Billion
Yum China Holdings completed the $1.2 billion acquisition of Pizza Hut brand ownership in Mainland China to eliminate license fees and accelerate store expansion.
Yum China Holdings, Inc. completed the acquisition of the Pizza Hut brand's ownership in Mainland China from Yum! Brands, Inc. for US$1.2 billion on August 7, 2026. The transaction, which was first announced in June 2026, eliminates a 3% license fee and is expected to increase Pizza Hut's restaurant and operating margins by 2.8%.
CEO Joey Wat stated that owning the brand provides greater strategic flexibility and allows the company to respond more nimbly to consumer needs. Under the new ownership structure, Yum China plans to accelerate net new store openings to more than 800 per year in 2027 and 2028, increasing the previous target of 600 stores per year.
To fund the purchase, Yum China secured an offshore RMB-denominated bridge loan of approximately US$1.2 billion with a 12-month tenor and an interest rate of roughly 2%. The company continues to evaluate long-term financing options.
