AmCham Urges Romania to Fix Fiscal Gaps After Fitch Rating
The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania called for urgent fiscal reforms after Fitch Ratings maintained the country's investment-grade credit rating at BBB-.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania issued a warning on August 5, 2026, stating that Romania's macroeconomic fragility persists despite a stable credit rating. The organization responded to a decision by Fitch Ratings to maintain Romania's investment-grade rating at BBB-, noting that while the rating signals investor confidence, it also exposes unresolved institutional and fiscal vulnerabilities.
Fitch Ratings projected a 2026 deficit of 5.9% of GDP, a figure slightly lower than the Government of Romania's own forecast of 6.2%. AmCham argued that political instability and slow reform implementation continue to hinder the economy. The business association emphasized that the private sector cannot offset a lack of policy predictability, particularly as the country awaits further reviews from S&P and Moody's.
To address these issues, AmCham called for cross-party agreement on strategic priorities and a concrete plan for euro adoption. The organization urged the government to professionalize public administration, restructure public spending, and combat tax evasion to prevent bottlenecks in cybersecurity and energy sectors.
