John James Selects Jay DeBoyer as Lieutenant Governor Running Mate

Republican gubernatorial nominee John James announced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that he has selected State Representative Jay DeBoyer as his running mate for Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. James, who won the August 4 primary, cited DeBoyer's background as a business owner and his experience in local government and election oversight as primary reasons for the selection.

DeBoyer, 56, currently serves as the chair of the House Oversight Committee and represents the 63rd district, covering parts of St. Clair and Macomb counties. His previous public service includes roles as the clerk and register of deeds for St. Clair County and as a trustee and supervisor for Clay Township. James stated that DeBoyer will help lead a fight against corruption, fraud, waste, and abuse.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel criticized the pick, claiming DeBoyer has peddled election conspiracy theories and represents an extreme agenda. James and DeBoyer are seeking to replace term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer and will face Democratic nominee and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the November general election. Benson has not yet named a running mate. Republican Party delegates are scheduled to officially nominate DeBoyer at their annual convention on August 22.
