Palau Condemns Chinese Nuclear Missile Test in South Pacific
President Surangel Whipps Jr. condemned China's nuclear-capable ballistic missile launch into the South Pacific as a threat to regional peace and security.
President Surangel Whipps Jr. condemned a recent test launch of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile by China into the South Pacific, labeling the action a serious threat to regional security. Whipps Jr. stated that the launch occurred without prior notification to Palau, which he asserted violates the Hague Code of Conduct on voluntary pre-launch notifications and undermines efforts to maintain a nuclear-free Pacific.
Whipps Jr. characterized the behavior as bullying and an affront to Palau's sovereignty. He called for increased transparency and stricter adherence to international treaties to mitigate geopolitical tensions and nuclear risks.
The Government of China defended the missile test, asserting the action was consistent with international law and not directed at any specific country or target. Despite the diplomatic friction, Palau is set to host the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' Meeting in September, where China is expected to attend as a dialogue partner.
