Supreme Court Orders Timeline for Trinamool Congress Symbol Dispute

The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Election Commission of India (ECI) to propose a timeline for resolving a leadership dispute between two rival factions of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The court is hearing a plea from Mamata Banerjee, who challenged a September 17 ECI decision to freeze the party's official name and its flowers and grass symbol.

As an interim measure for the October 6 by-elections in West Bengal's Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies, the ECI allotted the name Mamata All India Trinamool Congress and a football player symbol to Banerjee's group. The rival faction, led by Ritabrata Banerjee and Arup Roy, was granted the name Democratic Trinamool Congress and an envelope symbol. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued the freezing order was flawed and requested a resolution by October due to upcoming local body elections, though the rival faction claimed this deadline was insufficient.

While the Supreme Court declined to interfere with the interim arrangements during the active election cycle, it emphasized the need for prompt final adjudication to avoid prolonged delays. Separately, the Calcutta High Court criticized the ECI for awarding the envelope symbol to the Democratic Trinamool Congress, ruling that the commission violated fairness principles because the symbol had previously been allocated to the Indian Secular Front. The Supreme Court will hear the matter again on September 28.
