Wells Fargo to Launch Tokenized Deposits for Corporate Clients

Wells Fargo will introduce blockchain-based tokenized deposits this fall to enable 24/7 fund transfers and settlements for corporate clients in U.S. dollars and British pounds.

Wells Fargo plans to launch tokenized deposits for corporate clients this fall, enabling the 24/7 transfer, programming, and settlement of funds via blockchain technology. The initial rollout will support U.S. dollars and British pounds specifically for cross-border payments, with the bank intending to expand into additional currencies and countries next year.

Chief Financial Officer Michael P. Santomassimo stated that the initiative addresses a practical use case for regulated foreign exchange and cross-border settlements. To ensure broader utility, the bank intends to integrate its system with private networks and a tokenized deposit network being deployed by a group of American banks next year.

This move places Wells Fargo in direct competition with other traditional banking institutions, such as JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, which have already launched similar products. These banks are increasingly digitizing traditional deposits to counter the competitive threat posed by stablecoins.
