Nigeria Labour Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Deadlocked Talks

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have ordered mobilization for a nationwide strike if government negotiations fail by October 27.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have threatened nationwide industrial action after negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria deadlocked in Abuja on October 22. The unions alleged that the government delegation lacked the mandate to negotiate substantively, leading to a breakdown in talks.

Labor leaders are demanding a reduction of petrol prices to 2024 levels, a renegotiation of the national minimum wage, and the implementation of agreed tax relief measures. They are also seeking the resolution of disputes regarding allowances and settlements for public sector workers. Following the failed session, the Minister of Labour requested an adjournment until October 27 to ensure the attendance of relevant ministers and agency heads.

The NLC has since directed its affiliates and civil society allies to mobilize for a possible shutdown if the upcoming meeting fails to produce meaningful progress. While the unions remain open to dialogue, critics warn that a general strike would disrupt essential public services and further burden citizens already struggling with rising living costs.
