China Rejects China Squeeze Narrative with Global AI Initiatives

The Government of China has formally challenged the "China Squeeze" narrative, a term coined in a May 2026 paper by the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The institute's research argues that China's dominance in labor-intensive manufacturing limits the ability of poorer nations to industrialize.

Chinese state media responded by asserting that the narrative mistakes competitiveness for misconduct. Officials argue that global value chains actually allow developing economies to integrate into the world market via services and components. The government maintains that its manufacturing success resulted from decades of investment in education and infrastructure rather than unfair trade practices.

To counter the claims, China highlighted its current investments in electric vehicle supply chains across Southeast Asia. During the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, the government announced 5,000 AI training opportunities for developing countries and the deployment of an AI-powered weather-warning system for 30 nations.
