Bank OZK Diversifies Loan Book Amid CRE Headwinds
Bank OZK is expanding its corporate banking division to reduce reliance on commercial real estate after reporting a 9% decline in third-quarter net income.
Bank OZK reported third-quarter net income of $164.3 million, representing a 9% year-over-year decline, though the figure exceeded analyst earnings-per-share expectations. The Arkansas-based lender is actively diversifying its loan book to mitigate risks in its commercial real estate portfolio, which has been pressured by inflation, high interest rates, and remote work trends.
To execute this pivot, the bank established a Corporate and Institutional Banking division. This new unit added 65 client relationships and grew its loan portfolio to $8.63 billion as of September 30. While the bank saw $1.65 billion in commercial real estate repayments outpace new originations, nonperforming loans declined. This improvement was supported by the reclassification of a $915 million San Diego construction loan back to a pass rating.
CEO George Gleason expects high repayment levels to persist through 2027. He predicts the bank will return to commercial real estate loan growth in 2028 and achieve double-digit overall loan growth in 2027.
