Nigeria's National Assembly Transmits State Police Bill to States

The National Assembly of Nigeria clarified on Tuesday that it has transmitted only the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for approval. This specific bill seeks to establish State Police Services and was prioritized due to urgent security concerns and widespread public demand.

The announcement serves as a correction to public reports suggesting that all pending Constitution Alteration Bills had been sent to the states. The legislature emphasized that other proposed alterations will only be forwarded to state legislatures after they are passed in identical form by both chambers of the National Assembly, adhering to the established constitutional amendment process.
