German Factory Orders Rise 4.4 Percent in September

German factory orders grew 4.4 percent in September, led by the automotive and machinery sectors, despite high energy costs and interest rate pressures.

German factory orders rose 4.4 percent in September, according to data from the Statistisches Bundesamt. This rebound partially offsets a 10.1 percent decline recorded in August. The growth was primarily driven by a jump in the automotive industry and a substantial increase in machinery and equipment orders, while orders for other transport equipment, including aircraft and ships, fell sharply. When excluding large-scale items, new orders increased by 5.1 percent.

This manufacturing recovery follows a 0.2 percent expansion of the German economy during the third quarter. However, the sector continues to face significant headwinds. Manufacturers are struggling with input price inflation and competition from Chinese manufacturers, as well as high energy costs resulting from conflict between the United States and Iran.

Financing conditions remain tight due to previous interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank. Market expectations of another rate increase in December continue to pressure the industrial sector as it attempts to stabilize.
