Wisconsin Voters Prepare for August 11 Primary Elections

Wisconsin will hold legislative and gubernatorial primaries on August 11, with a general election scheduled for November 3. The results will determine the balance of power in the state Assembly and Senate, directly impacting the next governor's ability to implement policies on Medicaid expansion, education investment, and tax cuts.

Republicans are defending majorities held since 2011, supported by millions in contributions from billionaires Diane Hendricks and Elizabeth Uihlein. The Republican Assembly Campaign Committee and the Committee to Elect a Republican Senate raised $6.5 million and nearly $5 million respectively in the first half of the year. Democrats are attempting to flip five Assembly seats and two Senate seats, with a July Marquette Law School poll showing 46% of voters supporting Democrats compared to 42% for Republicans.

The gubernatorial race features a crowded Democratic field including Francesca Hong, David Crowley, Kelda Roys, and Joel Brennan. Outgoing Governor Tony Evers has endorsed David Crowley. On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany holds a significant lead over Andy Manske and has received the endorsement of Donald Trump.

Local contests are also prominent, particularly in Door County, where Republican candidates Carl Waterstreet and Curt Vandertie are challenging Democratic incumbent Sheriff Tammy Sternard. Other contested races include the U.S. House 8th District seat and state-level positions for secretary of state, state treasurer, and lieutenant governor.
