Automotive Alliance Urges Congress to Ban Chinese Cars

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation is lobbying the U.S. Congress to permanently ban the sale of Chinese automobiles over national security and unfair trade concerns.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation is lobbying the United States Congress to enact legislation that would permanently ban the sale of Chinese automobiles in the U.S. The industry group, which represents major automakers and parts suppliers including General Motors, Volkswagen, and Toyota, cites national security risks and a "pattern of unfair behavior" by China as the primary justifications for the ban.

Chinese electric vehicles are currently effectively barred from the U.S. market due to data security concerns and a 100 percent tariff. However, the group seeks a permanent legislative solution to prevent future market entry.

CEO John Bozzella warned that the rapid growth of Chinese vehicle sales in Europe serves as a cautionary example. He noted that over one million Chinese units were sold in Europe in 2026, illustrating the level of competition American automakers would face if current restrictions were lifted.
