Florida Primaries Reveal Deep Rifts in Both Major Parties
Florida primary results show a divide between centrist and socialist Democrats and a rejection of online-driven far-right candidates by Republicans.
Florida primary elections on Tuesday highlighted significant internal divisions within both the Democratic and Republican parties. In the Democratic primaries, David Jolly, a former Republican congressman, secured the gubernatorial nomination. Simultaneously, Angie Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated establishment favorite Alex Vindman for a statewide office.
These results sparked a rift between the socialist wing of the party and centrist Democrats. Representative Jared Moskowitz and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz emerged as leading voices of the establishment faction, with Moskowitz stating that "Florida is where DSA goes to die."
On the Republican side, Representative Byron Donalds won the gubernatorial nomination. The results indicated a rejection of candidates tied to far-right online movements. Representative Randy Fine defeated influencer Dan Bilzerian by nearly 40 points in the 6th congressional district, while incumbent Representative Cory Mills lost his race in the 7th district.
