Netflix Integrates GenAI Into 300 Titles and Acquires InterPositive
Netflix is using generative AI in 300 productions and acquired Ben Affleck's InterPositive startup for $587 million to accelerate post-production workflows.
In its second-quarter 2026 earnings report, Netflix revealed that generative AI workflows were utilized in approximately 300 titles this year. The technology is integrated across the entire production pipeline—from concept and pre-visualization to delivery—with the highest concentration in post-production. The company cited titles such as the docuseries "The American Experiment," the sports thriller "Glory," and the miniseries "Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri" as examples where AI enabled complex sequences, including enhanced crowds and historical battle scenes.
To scale these capabilities, Netflix acquired InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup founded by Ben Affleck, for $587 million in cash. The transaction, completed in March 2026 and disclosed in a July 17 SEC filing, brings a 16-person team to the company. InterPositive specializes in production-specific models for tasks such as relighting, mixing, and coloring, which can reduce physical production schedules by 20% and cut visual effects costs by 50%.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated that AI-enhanced footage in "The American Experiment" was produced twice as fast and at half the cost of traditional methods. He characterized AI as a tool to assist artists rather than replace them, noting that cost savings will likely be reinvested into more content. Financially, the company reported quarterly revenue of $12.56 billion, a 13.4% year-over-year increase, while maintaining free cash flow guidance of $12.5 billion.
