DWP Extends Personal Independence Payment Review Periods

The Department for Work and Pensions has implemented changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) awards for existing claimants in England and Wales to reduce the frequency of benefit reviews. Following an exercise conducted between mid-June and August 2026, the agency introduced a minimum three-year review period for affected awards.

For most new claimants aged 25 and over since April 2026, awards are now set for four years with a review occurring after three. If entitlement continues, subsequent awards generally last six years with a review after five. The agency continues to determine review periods based on individual circumstances, maintaining shorter periods for those expected to recover and longer periods for severe conditions.

These reforms aim to decrease the administrative burden on claimants. The agency noted that the implementation caused a temporary spike in automated notifications to local authorities, though these levels are expected to return to normal.
