Lamont and Fazio Clash Over Taxes in First Gubernatorial Debate

Governor Ned Lamont and Republican challenger Ryan Fazio debated affordability, immigration, and energy costs during their first televised gubernatorial encounter in Rocky Hill.

Incumbent Democratic Governor Ned Lamont and Republican challenger Ryan Fazio held their first televised gubernatorial debate on Thursday night in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. The candidates clashed over the state's cost of living, with Fazio, a state senator from Greenwich, accusing Lamont of raising taxes by $3 billion and maintaining a cozy relationship with the CEO of Eversource. Fazio proposed a gas tax holiday and a 20 percent reduction in electric bills to provide relief to families.

Lamont defended his eight-year record by citing eight consecutive balanced budgets and income tax cuts for seniors and the middle class. He dismissed Fazio's tax claims as inaccurate and argued that a gas tax holiday would create a budget deficit. Lamont attributed rising fuel and commodity costs to federal policies, specifically the tariffs and war in Iran under President Donald Trump, noting that Democrats established a $500 million fund to mitigate those losses.

The debate also focused on public safety and immigration. Fazio criticized the Trust Act for limiting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities, arguing it prevents the removal of undocumented criminals. Lamont rejected this characterization, citing the negative impact of ICE raids on families. The candidates are scheduled for a final debate on October 27.
