Upstart Pursues Bank Charter to Close Investor Perception Gap
Upstart is seeking a bank charter and securing capital partners to stabilize funding and align investor perception with its current growth and profitability.
AI-driven lending platform Upstart Holdings is pursuing a bank charter to streamline operations, reduce costs, and facilitate the launch of new products and expansion into new states. The move comes as the company seeks to bridge what CEO Paul Gu describes as a "severe" gap between investor perception and the company's business reality.
Gu noted that Upstart has faced multiple cycles of investor misunderstanding triggered by macroeconomic factors, including liquidity shortages and rising interest rates. While the company experienced a significant stock price crash in 2022, it is currently growing rapidly and is profitable on a GAAP basis. Gu argued that few profitable companies growing at Upstart's rate trade at similar multiples.
To increase financial resilience and ensure funding for originated loans, Upstart has secured committed capital partners, including Castlelake and Fortress.
