Taliban Marks Five Years of Control Over Afghanistan

The Government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan marked five years of control on August 15, 2026, following the 2021 withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops. Under the leadership of Amir Hibatullah Akhundzada, the regime has consolidated power by marginalizing moderate factions and concentrating economic control through mining contracts. While residents in Kabul report increased safety and a reduction in conflict, the population faces severe poverty, unemployment, and a healthcare crisis exacerbated by reduced humanitarian aid.

The administration, formally recognized only by Russia, claims to have stabilized the currency and improved infrastructure. Molvi Hayatullah Mahajar Farahi defended the government's security achievements and dismissed reports of instability as enemy propaganda. UN Women reports that the systematic dismantling of rights for women and girls has created the world's most severe women's rights crisis, with girls over 12 banned from secondary education and women excluded from universities and public spaces.

UNESCO estimates that 2.4 million girls are currently excluded from secondary school, while the World Food Program warns that child malnutrition has reached critical levels in one-third of provinces. Internationally, Afghanistan remains largely a pariah state. While China, India, and Turkey maintain trade and diplomatic relations, Western nations continue to use sanctions and frozen assets as leverage, engaging the regime primarily on migration and counter-terrorism.
