Georgia Committee Evaluates New Voting Systems to Replace QR Ballots
The Georgia state legislature's election committee tested voting equipment vendors to replace the state's QR-code tabulation system by January 2028.
The Joint Election Equipment Specifications and Standards Committee met in Atlanta on Thursday to evaluate vendors as Georgia prepares to replace its current voting systems. The state is phasing out its existing QR-code ballot tabulation system following security concerns, establishing a deadline of January 1, 2028, for the implementation of a new system.
During the session, lawmakers tested various machines and reviewed testimony regarding voter wait times and software integrity. State Senator Bo Hatchett questioned vendors on the most effective security features for hand-marked paper ballot systems. Ben Adida, Executive Director of Voting Works, testified that software integrity is the most critical security feature because it ensures only approved software can run on the systems.
The committee will provide a formal recommendation for a new system to the Georgia General Assembly and the secretary of state early next year.
