India Curtailed 8,133 GWh of Solar Power Due to Grid Constraints

Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, informed the Rajya Sabha that India curtailed 8,133 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of solar power from April to June 2026. The restrictions were implemented by the Grid Controller of India Ltd to prevent grid instability caused by an inability to absorb excess daytime supply.

The curtailment occurred in three phases: 2,417 GWh in April, 3,235 GWh in May, and 2,481 GWh in June. Naik attributed the issue to a mismatch between the rapid commissioning of renewable energy projects and the slower development of necessary transmission lines.

Alongside these constraints, the government provided updates on the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. As of July 22, 2026, the rooftop solar scheme has received over 75 lakh applications and led to the installation of approximately 39.7 lakh systems. These installations have benefitted more than 48 lakh households through 27,343.9 crore in Central Financial Assistance.
