Goldman Sachs Forecasts Limited Strength for Japanese Yen

Goldman Sachs analysts predict the Japanese yen will remain weak due to Bank of Japan policy uncertainty and expected U.S. Federal Reserve rate hikes.

Goldman Sachs analysts report that the Japanese yen has limited room to strengthen because of uncertainty surrounding the Bank of Japan's policy tightening pace. Strategists led by Kamakshya Trivedi note that investor doubt has grown following dissents against rate hikes from board nominees appointed by Prime Minister Takaichi.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda recently indicated that the central bank does not feel it is "behind the curve," suggesting a high bar for a potential rate hike in October. This cautious stance is compounded by expectations from Goldman Sachs that the Federal Reserve System will hike rates in October, a move that would maintain downward pressure on the yen.

The firm concludes that near-term yen strength is unlikely unless there is direct intervention or a significant portfolio shift by Japanese investors.
