US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion Amid AI Borrowing Surge
The US national debt has surpassed $40 trillion as the federal government and tech giants compete for borrowing to fund AI infrastructure.
The Federal government of the United States has seen its national debt surpass $40 trillion, triggering a capital squeeze as the public sector competes with private industry for borrowing. This fiscal pressure coincides with a massive borrowing surge from large technology companies seeking to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure, pushing U.S. government bond yields to nearly two-decade highs.
Nvidia is collaborating with Wall Street firms, including BlackRock, to marshal over $500 billion for AI development. Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management projects that debt will fund more than one-third of all AI spending by 2027. While this AI-driven growth has helped the economy remain resilient against inflation and global conflict, the scale of corporate issuance is driving up long-term Treasury yields.
These yields act as benchmarks for consumer loans, pushing household borrowing costs to their highest levels since the 2007 economic crisis. The Congressional Budget Office projects annual federal deficits will average $2.4 trillion through 2036. In response to the resulting market volatility and rising costs, the United States Department of the Treasury is attempting to stabilize the bond market.
