Pennsylvania Electricity Demand to Surge 19% From Data Centers

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission projects that data centers and associated power plants will drive a nearly 19% annual increase in statewide electricity demand over the next five years. While residential and commercial needs remain modest, industrial usage is forecast to grow by an average of 18.56% annually through 2030. The most acute growth is expected in the PPL Electric Utilities service territory, where industrial demand could rise by 51.05% annually.

To address this surge, a joint venture between PPL Corp. and Blackstone Infrastructure has acquired thousands of acres in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties to explore the construction of massive natural gas power plants. PJM Interconnection LLC reports that data centers account for 30 of the 32 gigawatts of forecasted demand increases through 2030.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation has warned that PJM's reserve margin could fall below required levels by 2029 due to the combination of this demand spike and the retirement of existing generation facilities. Commission Chairman Steve DeFrank stated that the state needs a clear picture of coming demand and sufficient infrastructure to serve that growth while protecting consumers from unreasonable costs.
