Wiltshire Council Granted Permission to Fly Progress Pride Flag
Wiltshire Council received approval to fly the Progress Pride flag at its Trowbridge headquarters for five days annually over a five-year period.
The Western Area Planning Committee of Wiltshire Council granted permission for the council to fly a Progress Pride flag outside its headquarters, County Hall in Trowbridge. The approval restricts the display of the 8.5-foot-wide flag to a maximum of five days per year for a duration of five years.
The decision followed an intense public debate, with 369 objections and 163 submissions of support. Campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen led the opposition, arguing that the flag represents a specific political ideology and that the council should remain neutral. In contrast, supporters including Councillor Liz Alstrom cited the Public Sector Equality Duty and the importance of fostering cohesive communities.
This ruling follows a separate application to fly the flag at the council's northern hub at Monkton Park in Chippenham, which was previously granted by officers under delegated powers. Trowbridge Town Council offered no objection to the application.
