Indian Government and Opposition Clash Over Student Protests
The Indian government and Opposition MPs are locked in a parliamentary standoff over the use of force against student protesters and NEET paper leaks.
A political standoff erupted during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 12, 2026, as the Government of India and Opposition MPs clashed over the handling of student protests. Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad accused the government of deploying pellet guns, tear gas, and spiked lathis against students at Jantar Mantar, claiming the administration failed to deliver promised justice.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated the government is prepared for a discussion and urged the Opposition to follow formal processes through Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Indian National Congress and other Opposition members of avoiding the debate, specifically regarding protests over the NEET paper leak. Rijiju expressed frustration that the Opposition is running away from a discussion while the government remains ready to respond to questions.
The current session has been characterized by frequent disruptions in both Houses. Beyond the student protests and NEET leak, Opposition members have raised allegations regarding the embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
