France Braces for General Strike Amid Rising Unrest
The French government deploys 70,000 police officers as labor unions launch a nationwide general strike protesting budget cuts and the cost of living.
The French Republic is facing a nationwide general strike on November 5, 2026, with labor unions organizing demonstrations across more than 220 locations. The protests target proposed government budget cuts and the rising cost of living, with expected disruptions to banking, hospital, air, and rail services. This escalation follows weeks of unrest that began with student blockades in September and peaked with arson and looting on October 17.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez coordinated the deployment of 70,000 police officers to maintain order and admitted the government failed to anticipate the October violence. In response to the disorder, the government has proposed a bill that would hold protesters financially liable for damages up to €10,000. Economy Minister Roland Lescure described the national economy as being at a standstill due to the ongoing instability.
While Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that the majority of high school students have returned to their classrooms, the strike continues to impact the public sector. Over 17% of education staff and various other public workers are expected to participate in the walkouts.
