CMA Investigates Euro Car Parks Over Unfair Petrol Station Fines
The Competition and Markets Authority is investigating Euro Car Parks for ticketing drivers in fuel queues and is cracking down on private parking operators across the UK.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an evidence-gathering investigation into Euro Car Parks to determine if ticketing drivers who queue for petrol pumps, car washes, and other forecourt services violates consumer protection law. The probe, which is expected to continue until Spring 2027, also examines the company's appeals process. Euro Car Parks is currently appealing a separate £473,000 penalty issued in February for failing to respond to a CMA information notice.
This inquiry is part of a broader regulatory crackdown on private parking operators following complaints about faulty apps, broken machines, and unclear signage. The CMA issued warning letters to several firms and published an open letter demanding that operators comply with consumer law. Data shows private parking firms issue nearly 48,000 tickets daily across Britain, with RAC research indicating 14.4 million tickets were issued in 2024/25.
To address systemic issues, the CMA recommended that the government implement a new Code of Practice to ensure drivers are informed of their rights. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government welcomed this action and is working on the guidelines. Trade bodies, including the International Parking Community and the British Parking Association, stated they are reviewing the CMA's guidance to help members meet these standards.
