Turning Point USA Post Sparks Debate Over Burrito Prices

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, sparked a national debate over the rising cost of living after sharing a student's comment on X regarding 20-dollar burritos. The post triggered a divide among conservative figures regarding the causes of inflation and the responsibility of the consumer.

Commentator Ben Shapiro argued that deregulation and the removal of tariffs are necessary to lower prices, while Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen attributed high costs to the use of delivery services like DoorDash. In contrast, Representative Dan Crenshaw and Marc Thiessen dismissed the complaints, suggesting that individuals should work harder or opt for cheaper alternatives such as ramen.

To quantify the price surges, the nonprofit Advancing American Freedom created a Burrito Index to track regional price variations for Chipotle steak burritos in cities including San Francisco and Des Moines. Ryan Bourne, an economist at the Cato Institute, attributed the price increases to a combination of general inflation—which he estimates has raised consumer prices by approximately 28 percent over the last six years—and rising costs for labor, rent, and ingredients.
