Independent Candidates Launch Bids for Alaska Governor

Independent candidates Bill Walker and Meda DeWitt have entered the race for Governor of Alaska, offering competing visions for the state's fiscal future and resource management. Walker, a former governor, focuses on maximizing resource revenues and streamlining the permitting process for resource development to reduce delays that can last up to ten years. He argues for reforming the oil production tax system to address the budget deficit before the state considers broad-based taxes on residents.

DeWitt, a Lingít traditional healer and former chair of the movement to recall Governor Mike Dunleavy Jr., advocates for economic diversification through renewable energy and local manufacturing. She opposes the Alaska LNG project, claiming it lacks transparency and prioritizes exports over local needs. To fund the state budget, DeWitt proposes taxing seasonal tourism and non-resident workers rather than implementing broad-based taxes on residents.

While Walker emphasizes his experience governing as an independent to work with the Legislature, DeWitt focuses on long-term planning for climate change and education reform, including the establishment of teacher pensions and the integration of subsistence training into school curricula.
