Singapore Outlines Goals for Upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship
Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan detailed plans for Singapore's ASEAN chairmanship, focusing on economic integration and reducing superpower influence in Southeast Asia.
Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan outlined the strategic objectives for Singapore's upcoming chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) starting next year. He emphasized the necessity of deeper economic integration within the region and the expansion of partnerships with Canada, the Pacific Islands, South America, Africa, and the European Union.
Balakrishnan noted that ASEAN may already function as the fourth largest composite economy globally. He urged that the region be assessed on its own merit, rather than being viewed as an "arena for contestation between the superpowers" or a site for proxy wars.
Highlighting strong first-half growth in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, the minister pointed to the role of AI and semiconductor technology in driving trade. He specifically noted that Taiwan became Singapore's largest trading partner last year.
