China Warns Philippines Over Proposed Taiwan Office in Cebu

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China warned the Philippines to adhere to the one-China principle through concrete actions to avoid damaging bilateral relations. The diplomatic warning follows media reports that authorities in Taiwan intend to establish a representative office in the central Philippine province of Cebu.

Chinese spokesperson Guo Jiakun issued the statement during a daily news briefing on Wednesday. He emphasized that the Philippines must refrain from taking steps that could harm the relationship between the two nations. The move signals China's opposition to any formalization of ties between the Philippines and Taiwan in the region.
