Councillor Julian Chang Resigns From People’s National Party

Councillor Julian Chang resigned from the People’s National Party following a public conflict and sexual harassment allegations against MP Dwayne Vaz.

Councillor Julian Chang of the Savanna-la-Mar Division resigned from the People’s National Party with immediate effect last Monday. The departure follows a prolonged public conflict with Westmoreland Central Member of Parliament Dwayne Vaz, which included Chang being removed from the constituency executive's WhatsApp group and replaced as constituency chairperson.

The People’s National Party recently established a committee to investigate sexual harassment allegations filed by Chang against Vaz. The party stated that it had previously attempted to mediate concerns between the two figures through internal structures.

During a Westmoreland Municipal Corporation meeting on Thursday, CEO Marlet Wellington informed Chang that her email resignation was insufficient. The corporation requires a signed official letter communicated through the chairman to finalize the process.

Ian Myles, a councillor for the Jamaica Labour Party, praised Chang as a champion for her division. He suggested that her current status as an independent may be a precursor to joining the Jamaica Labour Party, noting that independent status in Jamaica is often limited.
