Doug Ford Open to Ending Seasonal Time Changes
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed openness to abolishing seasonal time changes if Quebec and the U.S. eastern corridor agree to a coordinated move.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated he is open to ending the twice-annual clock switch, provided that Quebec, New York, and the eastern corridor of the United States agree to a coordinated transition. This position follows an announcement from Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon that his government intends to abolish seasonal time changes, though Quebec has not yet determined whether to adopt permanent daylight time or permanent standard time.
Several other Canadian jurisdictions, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and northwestern Ontario, have already opted to remain on daylight time. The decision involves a conflict between convenience and health; while permanent daylight time would lead to later sunrises during the winter solstice in Toronto, the Canadian Medical Association Journal recently published an analysis favoring permanent standard time. The publication cited concerns from sleep experts regarding the impact of darker winter mornings.
