Delhi Police Detain Hundreds Protesting Election Commissioner
Delhi Police detained hundreds of protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.
The Delhi Police detained hundreds of protesters, including student groups and opposition political leaders, on Friday during a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters demanded Kumar's resignation following allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which reportedly resulted in the deletion of over 47 lakh names in Delhi.
To prevent the gathering, police deployed approximately 4,000 personnel and enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Authorities suspended services at 12 metro stations and established barricades on Tolstoy Marg and Janpath, though some demonstrators reached Jantar Mantar before being detained.
The Election Commission of India denied reports of internal differences regarding the revision process and stated that missing voters could re-register by providing relevant documents. Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students’ Association, was among those detained and has vowed to continue the protests with another gathering scheduled for Saturday.
